Populist Saints: B. T. and Ellen Roberts and the First Free Methodists

Howard A. Synder

When we all get to heaven, if we do, we will find a million or more saints there who would not have made it if it hadn’t been for the shared life and ministry of B. T. and Ellen Roberts. That would meet Benjamin and Ellen Roberts’s standard for success. This book is the story of Benjamin Titus Roberts (1823-93) and Ellen Lois (Stowe )Roberts (1825-1908) and their life and ministry together. Benjamin necessarily occupies a larger place in the narrative than does Ellen, just as he did in their ministry, for reasons we will explore. Yet their life was a remarkable collaboration. At key points the story is seen better as a partnership than as the story of two separate persons.
